Combatting the Famine of Biblical Knowledge

When a teacher asked her class to define the words ignorance and apathy, Larry retorted, “I don’t know, and I don’t care!”

“You’re absolutely right!” said the teacher.

We as churchgoers today don’t know the Bible because we don’t care—at least not to the extent that we should. In his article on biblical illiteracy, Dr. Kenneth Berding of Biola University’s Talbot School of Theology introduces readers to Maxine Gowing. A single mother of three with two jobs, Maxine was 34 when she became a Christian. Making God’s Word a priority in her life, she read through the Bible every year. Also, during each of 15 weeks every year she committed seven verses to memory, memorizing at least four Bible books in the process. The verses she learned sustained her in hard times and helped her share Christ others. Let Maxine’s example inspire you to love and learn God’s Word.
