Recognizing man’s sinfulness and his tendency to become corrupt when given too much power, the founders of America set up a divided system of government. It contains three branches—executive, legislative, and judicial. The branches are separate by intention, making it possible for each branch to restrain the others, keeping them from overstepping their authority.
Also quite intentionally, our founders patterned the roles of these governmental institutions—the presidency, the Congress, and the courts—after God’s multiple roles as king, lawgiver, and judge. Isaiah 33:22 says that “the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our Lawgiver, the LORD is our King; He will save us.”
This is but one of many ways the Bible shaped America during its infancy. No system is perfect, but the Bible is the perfect foundation for government. Pray that God would send a revival and call America back to Him and to biblical truth.
