The Definition of Marriage Is Not Up for Grabs

Can Christians agree to disagree on the definition of marriage? The Nashville Statement affirms lifelong man-woman marriage and says no. Why? One reason is because divine symbols are vitally important to the God who designed them.

God created the man in His own image but stated it was not good for him to be alone. He therefore made for Adam “a helper comparable to him”—a woman. God also made her in His image. Adam and Eve were both human, yet different so they could come together and work together as an effective team.

A man bears God’s image in ways a woman cannot, and a woman bears it in ways a man cannot. United in marriage, though, they are able to present to all, including their children, a more complete picture of God. More specifically, an opposite-sex married couple can reflect both unity and diversity within the triune Godhead.
