The Importance of Enhancing Educational Options for Christian Families

Fearing that they might offend Christian parents who send their children to public schools, Christian teachers who teach in the public school system, or other Christians involved in the public school system in some way, church leaders have failed to become knowledgeable and to warn parents about the evil influences their children will encounter and are encountering in public schools. While it clearly is not the job of the church to dictate to parents where and how to educate their children, the church does have a duty to inform, encourage, equip, and warn parents and families when the danger is real—and it is real.

Church help for parents may include an offer of more educational options. Churches can establish Christian schools, for example, and they can enhance opportunities for homeschooling. The church has for too long ignored threats to parent’s leadership in bringing up their children “in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). This includes children’s education.

No educational approach is perfect, but viable alternatives to public schools are desperately needed. Moreover, parents need to feel alternatives are within their reach.

Parents need more alternatives to public education within their reach.
